American Express statement to CSV
Drop an American Express card statement PDF below. It's parsed and reconciled in this tab — free, no signup, and nothing is uploaded.
What to expect from American Express statements
- Text-based (native) PDFs only — statements you download directly from American Express's site or app, not scanned copies.
- American Express card statements don't print a per-row running balance — we verify against the opening/closing totals instead and say so plainly rather than showing a false green badge.
- Password-protected PDFs are supported — you'll be prompted in-tab.
See the full supported banks matrix for what's verified and what isn't.
Export your American Express statement as
CSV for spreadsheets and most accounting-software imports, Excel (.xlsx) for a formatted workbook ready for pivot tables, or QBO for a direct QuickBooks Web Connect import — OFX, QFX, and QIF are also available from the export panel above. Every format is built from the same reconciled transaction list, so the numbers match no matter which one you pick.
How American Express's statement layout is actually parsed
American Express statements are recognized automatically — no need to tell the tool which bank you're uploading. The parser looks for American Express-specific section headings to separate deposits from withdrawals: a section beginning with text matching Payments and Credits is treated as credits, and one matching New Charges as debits. If a statement doesn't match those headings — a redesigned layout, a business rather than personal account — the parser falls back to its bank-agnostic geometric detection rather than failing outright.
- American Express statements are recognized from "American Express" or "americanexpress.com" text on the page.
- Card statements list charges under "New Charges" and also recognize "Fees" and "Interest Charged" as separate debit sections, merged into the same withdrawal side as charges.
- American Express card statements don't print a running balance next to each transaction at all — the reconciliation check runs against the statement's printed new balance and previous balance instead: previous balance plus charges minus payments and credits should equal the new balance.
- "Page X of Y" footers and the standard federal-registration boilerplate are recognized as noise and excluded from the transaction list.
Common questions
- Why doesn't the balance-chain check run on my Amex statement?
- Card statements don't print a running balance after each individual charge — only a previous balance and a new balance for the billing period. The balance-chain check is skipped for that reason and shown as "skipped," not silently passed; the statement-totals check verifies previous balance + charges − payments and credits = new balance instead.
- Are both charges and payments included in the CSV/Excel export?
- Yes — both new charges and payments/credits are included as signed amounts in the same transaction list, so a single Amount column sums to the period's net change.
- What if my Amex statement is password protected?
- You'll be prompted for the password in the tab before parsing starts. It's used locally to decrypt the PDF and is never sent anywhere.
